A row has broken over leaked information with regard to budget cuts. Leaked information suggests that mobile libraries and cutting school meals and catering staff are other areas on the disputed list. Other items on the list included day centres for the elderly, free school transport for over-16s, cutting park maintenance and closing parks in winter.
Whether the list is accurate is unknown.
Most council seem reluctant to cut their overstaffing and prefer to cut front line services.
Possibly it would be sensible to introduce a small charge for using mobile libraries & cost savings could be made in school transport by charging for al journeys of upto 3 miles and only reimbursing any excess if the jorney to school is over 3 miles.
Cuts also though need to be made incouncils staffing levels. The number of local counciloors could also be reduced.
Councils could easilly centralize the back office functions such as HR, IT, Finance, Management Legal Purchasing etc. There could be on central office say to cover South Wales providing these services for al the South Wales councils. Huge saving to be made there
