Local councilors were booed and heckled over their handling of the Newport Redevelepment debacle. The long drawn out and sory tale of this recdevelopment whicvh started several years ago has been a case of failure after failure after failure
organised by Newport’s Chamber of Trade and chaired by its chief executive Ken Ellis, saw shopkeepers and others quiz Newport council leader Matthew Evans and deputy leader Ed Townsend on the future of the city during a bad-tempered gathering at the King's Hotel.
During one question on what is being done to attract news firms, an answer from Cllr Evans about using the Ryder Cup to attracted new business received a torrent of boos.
Cllr Evans angrily replied: "You might not have got anything out the Ryder Cup but we got £2m of publicity for the city."
That particular remark sums up the attitude of the council. What he failed to state is they spent over a £100 Million promoting the Ryder Cup & all we have is a claim of £1 million in advertising. Even that is a very suspect claim.
It would have been far cheaper and more effect to just by a slot on National TV
